Turn on a Dime

The English idiom "To turn on a dime" means to change (direction) very quickly. One thing we are learning here in the Netherlands is that the weather here can change very, very quickly. It can be warm and sunny at 10:15, drenching you in torrential rain at 10:20, terrifying you with thunder and lightning at 10:25, blowing hard enough to knock you over at 10:30, and sunny and warm again by 10:35. Kim affectionately refers to this as being washed and blow-dried all in one bicycle ride.

We've learned to watch the weather closely and are beginning to understand what we originally took for 'far too detailed' weather forecasts that showed with precision the amount of rain expected each day and when it would fall, and the amount of sunshine expected each data and when it could be enjoyed.

For example ... if you mouse over the first blue area of rain for today you'd see 03:00 - 04:00 2,4 mm which explains why I was awakened last night to the sound of rain pounding on the windows. Similarly the yellow area tells me that I better enjoy the 22 minutes of sunshine between 17:00 and 18:00 because after that it is all clouds ... and I'm likely to get a sprinkle of rain on my walk home.

  

First Impressions • Eerste Indrukken

Welcome to Holland! From the moment we arrived we were warmly greeted by hordes of Dutch mosquitos. Yes, they love Canadians too! I have the lovely red welts upon welts to prove it. But everything has been so MARVELOUS here that this may be the first you've heard of our minor little pest problem. I'm not complaining, for example, that it's been quite warm when not stormy, and that the windows have no screens?

In this first week, we've been having a super time exploring and finding everything we need. Best store ever was just a 5 min walk away, perhaps even closer than our mailbox back home. Imagine the range of goods of a Walmart, but the quality of Thrifty's, at Dollar store prices! We heard that "Action" has definitely got a reputation amongst frugal families here. Can't beat the grin on my face that one is close by, thinking how easy it will be gradually setting up our apartment *just* from Action! Naturally our place came with a modest set of standard supplies but a lot of bare spaces - like a guy might furnish handsomely from IKEA, but begging for a woman's touch with the little things :) Cam and I are practicing working cheerfully together since setup can be draining and a breeding ground for conflict. Funny comebacks sure help! We told Alex he's getting a firsthand education on how to set up a place, so he'll be all set when they cover that in Planning 12 later. Grocery shopping is super easy too, and people at the chain stores speak English in case our Dutch is limited. I'm pretty blown away by how convenient everything is, but we're situated just 2 blocks from Erasmus University so this is like a student village square within the larger city, with of course all the goods that would pass through a world class port city. I predict we will soon be *spoiled for choice*!

Our other essential equipment included bicycles for everyone. We found decent used ones at the local Piekfijn, a secondhand store. They included locks as a special offer. Abby was treated to a brand new bike from a bike shop, just her size. She and Cam are also making it the main character in a special bedtime series called "The Adventures of the Little Blue Bike and His Girl" I hope to hear more about these but usually the tales are spun on the nights I beg to go to bed early to try to catch up on some rest.

Next on the shopping list will be MORE FANS and NETTING so that we can sleep in peace, in the city that never sleeps... before school starts next week. Today we met staff at both Abby and Alex's schools, and tomorrow night we welcome Amy's arrival and look forward to planning her courses online and her personal growth opportunities for the year as a young adult. Cam has had a full week getting used to his new work and meeting his Dutch colleagues, and coordinating our family registration and paperwork. I think he's very glad the big things are falling into place now. "Thank you God for your provision!"

All the while, our mobile phones have been busy snapping and sharing via Facebook some first impressions of this lively new lifestyle we've landed in. Enjoy!

Welkom naar Nederland! Vanaf het moment dat we aankwamen werden we hartelijk begroet door hordes op Nederlandse muggen. Ja, ze houden van Canadezen ook! Ik heb de mooie rode striemen op striemen om het te bewijzen. Maar alles is zo WONDERBAAR hier dat dit misschien wel de eerste die je hebt gehoord van onze kleine kleine pest probleem. Ik klaag niet, bijvoorbeeld, dat het heel warm wanneer niet stormachtig is geweest, en dat de ramen hebben geen schermen?

In deze eerste week hebben we een super tijd het verkennen en het vinden van alles wat we nodig hebben. Beste winkel ooit was slechts een 5 minuten lopen, misschien zelfs dichterbij dan onze mailbox terug naar huis. Stel je het bereik van de goederen van een Walmart, maar de kwaliteit van Thrifty's, tegen prijzen op Dollar winkel! We hoorden dat de "Actie" zeker heeft een reputatie onder zuinig gezinnen hier. Te denken hoe gemakkelijk het geleidelijk zal zijn het opzetten van ons appartement *slechts* uit de Actie! Natuurlijk onze plaats kwam met een bescheiden set van standaard levert, maar een heleboel kale ruimtes - zoals een man fraai zou leveren van IKEA, maar bedelen voor een vrouw contact met de kleine dingen :) Cam en ik oefenen werken vrolijk samen sinds setup kunnen worden aftappen en een voedingsbodem voor conflicten. Grappig comebacks zeker helpen! We vertelde Alex dat hij het krijgen van een eerste hand voorlichting over hoe het opzetten van een plaats, dus hij zal klaar zijn wanneer ze dat in Planning 12 later te dekken. Boodschappendienst is super eenvoudig ook, en mensen bij de winkelketens spreekt Engels in het geval van onze Nederlandse beperkt. Ik ben behoorlijk weggeblazen door hoe handig alles is, maar we zijn gelegen op slechts 2 blokken van de Erasmus Universiteit, dus dit is een student dorpsplein binnen de grotere stad, met natuurlijk alle goederen die door middel van een wereldklasse haven. Ik voorspel dat we binnenkort *verwend* zijn!

Onze andere essentiële apparatuur inclusief fietsen voor iedereen. Vonden we fatsoenlijk gebruikte die bij de lokale Piekfijn, een tweedehands winkel. Zij omvatten sloten als een speciale aanbieding. Abby werd getrakteerd op een gloednieuwe fiets van een fiets winkel, alleen haar grootte. Zij en Cam Ook maakt het de hoofdpersoon in een speciale slapengaan serie genaamd "De avonturen van de Little Blue Bike and His Girl" Ik hoop om meer over deze, maar meestal de verhalen zijn gesponnen op de nachten ik smeken om naar bed te gaan horen vroeg om te proberen in te halen op wat rust.

Volgende op het boodschappenlijstje zal meer FANS en netten zodat we kunnen slapen in vrede, in de stad die nooit slaapt ... voordat de school begint volgende week. Vandaag ontmoetten we personeel van beide Abby en Alex de scholen, en morgenavond we zijn blij met komst Amy's en kijken uit naar de planning van haar cursussen online en haar persoonlijke groeimogelijkheden voor het jaar als een jonge volwassene. Cam heeft een volle week wennen aan zijn nieuwe werk en het voldoen aan zijn Nederlandse collega's, en het coördineren van onze familie registratie en papierwerk. Ik denk dat hij erg blij dat de grote dingen vallen op hun plaats nu. "Dank u God voor uw voorzienigheid!"

Al die tijd hebben onze mobiele telefoons zijn drukke snapping en delen via Facebook enkele eerste indrukken van deze levendige nieuwe levensstijl we hebben geland in. Geniet!

Falling for Rotterdam

I've always enjoyed discovering the differences between different people, places, and cultures. My contributions will tend toward the bits and pieces that catch my attention along the way.

In this photo you see me balanced upon the edge of one of many, many canals in Rotterdam. I'm about 7 feet up from the water, just beside the sidewalk. Notice anything unusual? Absolutely no barriers between the pedestrians, bicycles, cars, and these canals. You'd never get away with this in North America but here it is normal. I'm told that in Amsterdam there is a full-time city crew that has a special barge that spends all day, every day, cruising the various canals and dredging up all the bicycles that invariable end up at the bottom of the canal.

Looking forward to a year of 'Life without rails in Rotterdam'.

Going Forward by Faith • Gaan Vooruit door het Geloof

Today's the day! Three flights, quick transfers, "a snack, a drink, and a show on", and hopefully a fridge magnet to say we've set foot in Reykjavik, Iceland - along the way. The quote is classic Abby, from when she was very little and found comfort in that trio of service and hospitality. Variations on that still make us grin to this day! Here's to a smooth travel day with our carefully packed luggage and carry-ons and certain beloved stuffed animals and their people, all getting to their destination. We know Who goes before us and even now He is holding our collective hand on this grand adventure. Let's get busy!!!

Vandaag is de dag! Drie vluchten, snelle transfers ", een hapje, een drankje en een show op ', en hopelijk een magneet om te zeggen dat we een voet in Reykjavik, IJsland - natuurlijk. Het citaat is klassiek Abby, van toen ze was erg klein en vond troost in dat trio van service en gastvrijheid. Variaties op die maken ons nog steeds grijns op deze dag! Hier is een soepele reisdag met onze zorgvuldig verpakt bagage en handbagage en bepaalde geliefde opgezette dieren en hun volk, allen krijgen naar hun bestemming. We weten Wie gaat voor ons en zelfs nu Hij houdt onze collectieve hand op dit grootse avontuur. Laten we bezig !!!  Aan de slag !!!

Packing Up and Weighing In • Inpakken en het Beheer van de Bagage

My friends and family know that I'm personally not one to agonize over every pound or the number on the scale - preferring to measure my life by degrees of contentment and thankfulness I can abide in every day.

Up until now, that is. When you have to edit your personal belongings down to what will fit in ONE <50lb checked bag and a modest carry-on bag to complement an equally modest MEC pod sling pack as your personal item... that's when each and every pound matters!

Over the last 30 days I've undergone an intense scrutiny of everything I possessed and thought I might want to bring along on this journey. Don't laugh. I've packed and repacked, heaved and weighed each attempt to "get it down" to a manageable 47lbs and a system so tight I can tell by touch what my carry-on holds.

Each item has had to justify its presence and vouch for its necessity.

I have a NEW vision of what life could look like, if only I could adopt this "Lean Philosophy" for good!

Meanwhile, Cam says the house looks GREAT and we've been enjoying a less-cluttered openness that has been good for all of us.

That's because I've learned to let go of what I couldn't bear to stuff in a bin for a year, either. Someone else can and should benefit from our extras.

And the travelling baggage haulers aren't groaning, either. Cam thought he might need therapy to get over yours truly's disastrous over-packing from our year in Japan. No one needs to go through that agony, strain, and exorbitant handling charges EVER again. Lesson learned!!!

Mijn vrienden en familie weten dat ik persoonlijk niet een te worstelen met elk pond of het nummer op de schaal - de voorkeur aan mijn leven door graden van tevredenheid en dankbaarheid ik kan blijven in elke dag te meten.

Tot nu toe, dat is. Wanneer u uw persoonlijke bezittingen neer op wat past in ONE bewerken < 22kg gecontroleerd zak en een bescheiden handbagage tot een even bescheiden MEC pod sling pak aanvulling als uw persoonlijk item ... dat is wanneer elke pond zaken!

In de afgelopen 30 dagen heb ik een intensieve controle van alles wat ik bezat en dacht dat ik zou willen op deze reis mee te nemen heb ondergaan. Niet lachen. Ik heb verpakt en omgepakt, hees en woog elke poging om "get it down" tot een beheersbaar £ 47 en een systeem zo strak ik kan vertellen op de tast wat mijn handbagage houdt.

Elk item heeft gehad om zijn aanwezigheid te rechtvaardigen en instaan voor de noodzaak ervan.

Ik heb een nieuwe visie van hoe het leven eruit zou kunnen zien, als ik kon deze "Lean filosofie" voor een goede te nemen!

Ondertussen Cam zegt het huis ziet er geweldig uit en we hebben al genieten van een minder rommelig openheid die is goed geweest voor ons allemaal.

Dat komt omdat ik heb geleerd om te laten gaan van wat ik niet kon verdragen om spullen in een bak voor een jaar, hetzij. Iemand anders kan en moet profiteren van onze extra's.

En de reizende bagage vervoerders zijn niet kreunen, hetzij. Cam dacht dat hij therapie nodig hebben om meer dan ondergetekende is rampzalig over-verpakking van ons jaar in Japan. Niemand moet ooit weer gaan door die pijn, spanning, en exorbitante handling kosten. Les geleerd!!!

Our Dutch home • Onze Nederlandse huis

It's official! As of today, August 1st, we are renting a charming apartment that is located in the heart of Rotterdam - close to shops, the giant outdoor Binnerotte street market, and the world famous Markthal indoor covered market - can you tell I love markets?! Most importantly, it's close to Cam's work, everyone's schools, and everything we could possibly need is a short walk away. Can't wait to see our new Dutch home very soon!

Het is officieel! Met ingang van vandaag, 1 augustus, zijn we het huren van een charmant appartement dat is gelegen in het hart van Rotterdam - dicht bij winkels, de reus outdoor Binnerotte straat markt, en de wereldberoemde Markthal indoor overdekte markt - u kan vertellen dat ik hou van markten! Belangrijker nog, het is dicht bij Cam's werk, ieders scholen, en alles wat we nodig zou kunnen hebben is een korte loopafstand. Kan niet wachten om onze nieuwe Nederlandse huis zeer binnenkort te zien!
